Heard about gel blasters but not sure how they work, whether they're safe, or what you actually need? This guide gives you the full picture in 5 minutes.
What is a gel blaster
A gel blaster (also known as a gel ball blaster, gel gun, or Gel Blaster) is an electric toy that fires small gel balls made of absorbent polymer. It looks like a pistol or rifle, but the ammo is completely non-toxic, biodegradable, and simply disappears after impact.
How it works technically
The principle is simple:
- Gel balls start out as dry little granules (about 2 mm)
- Before playing, you soak them in water for 4-6 hours — during this time they swell up to 7-8 mm
- You pour them into the blaster's hopper (magazine)
- An electric motor with a piston mechanism fires them out of the barrel at around 40-45 m/s
Maximum projectile energy in the EU is capped at 0.21 J, which is significantly less than airsoft (1 J) and an order of magnitude less than classic paintballs.
Is it safe?
Yes — as long as you follow the basics:
- Always wear protective eyewear (included with every blaster)
- Don't aim at the face at point-blank range
- Don't shoot at animals
- Play in line with local laws — in the EU, gel blasters are legal as a toy for players aged 14 and up
What you need to get started
To get fully started you just need:
- A blaster (every Blastero blaster includes everything you need to start)
- Gel balls (a pack is included, but you'll want more soon)
- Protective eyewear (in the box)
- A bit of water to soak the balls
